"An acting teacher once told me (back when I was acting) that if you do one thing each day toward your craft, you can call yourself an actor." I love this advice. It also felt like a throw back to Sister Act II where Whoopie Goldberg gives a book to one of the girls played by Lauryn Hill stating something along the lines of if you wake up every morning and all you can think about is singing then your a singer.
I have the same problem (also a subscriber). There are no links to the documents in query critique weeks in the Substack posts, and you’ve stopped sending email notifications which used to contain links to the documents too (I’ve checked and I’m still signed up to receive these).
Under the Books with Hooks heading in the newsletter, the PDF documents are available to download by clicking on the download button, whether in the Substack app or in your email.
When we publish each issue of the newsletter on Tuesdays and Fridays, Substack automatically posts in the app and sends an email to every subscriber.
I'm really confused as well. I'm looking at a Tuesday Newsletter titled "So You've Just Comped a Booker Nominee..." Is that the correct newsletter, or is there another one? I've hit ever link in it, and nothing gives me links to the critiques. Thanks in advance for your help!
That particular one is actually the Friday newsletter, so it wouldn't have the written critiques in it. It was a Books with Hooks week on the podcast that week, which means the query critiques for it appeared in the following week's paid Tuesday edition (the 19th). Don't forget that now that the show has moved to having Books with Hooks one week and author interviews the next, the written critiques will only appear in every other Tuesday issue.
I hope this helps! Thanks so much for subscribing! 😊
I'm a paid subscriber but I don't see any books with hooks files to download and the books with hooks tab doesn't show anything past June. What am I missing?
Hi Sara, thanks so much for being a paid subscriber! We appreciate your support 💖
In September, the hosts made an announcement that they would be doing the Books with Hooks segment bi-weekly. So, in our Tuesday newsletter (every other week), under the BWH section, there you will find the downloadable query letters which have been critiqued.

YES! Isn't that SO validating? 💖
It really is. So often we think we have a whole host of things we have to do to be a “writer”.
